Vincent Roumagnac is a Basque-French artist and researcher based in Helsinki. Trained in (straight) theatre, first as an actor and later as a director, he gradually moved away from theatre as a medium of human drama representation to explore what it might become in response to ecological, technological, and geopolitical transformations within what he coined as a discipline-fluid methodology. Instead of reinventing theatre’s forms, he relocates its operations and rituals. His work explores how the stage can shift from an anthropocentric space of representation to a relational milieu in which humans, other-than-humans, landscapes, architectures, technologies, algorithms, data, and memories participate in a shared (eco)dramaturgy.

Working across visual art, scenography, installation, performance, and artistic research, Roumagnac develops site-sensitive interventions that investigate what he calls re-ecologising theatre. Beyond producing installations from and for theatre (as discipline/institution), he pursues theatre by other means, revisiting its operations into exhibitions, botanical gardens, archives, landscapes, digital infrastructures, and other environments. Through what he calls redirecting, he transforms directing into a practice of reorienting relations, agencies, temporalities, and materialities. His works do not stage narratives so much as they compose situations of coexistence, where ecological interdependencies, memory, and other-than-human agencies become active procedures of composition rather than themes of representation.

This approach took shape through his doctoral artistic research project Reacclimating the Stage (2015-2020) and was further developed in the postdoctoral project Data Ocean Theatre (2020-2025). Since 2025, he has been developing the long-term artistic research project Floral Dramaturgies (2025–2030), extending this investigation into the ecological and political genealogies of Western theatre. He understands artistic research as an ecosystemic practice in which concepts emerge through art-making and are disseminated through experiential, collaborative, and sensory modes of collective knowledge production. Since 2021, he has been affiliated with the University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki) as a visiting researcher, where he supervises students and teaches across the intersecting fields of performance, visual and installation arts, theatre ecology, ecodramaturgy, site-sensitive practices, artistic research, and interdisciplinary methodologies.

Since 2010, Roumagnac has collaborated with Finnish choreographer Simo Kellokumpu and, since 2012, with French visual artist Aurélie Pétrel. In 2020, as part of his duo with Pétrel, he was awarded the Villa Kujoyama Residency Prize. His solo and collaborative projects have been presented in France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Lithuania, Iceland, Argentina, Japan, and Canada, including at Centre Pompidou (Paris), MAMC+ (Saint-Étienne), Comédie de Caen, Kiasma (Helsinki), Zodiak (Helsinki), Hiroshima Art Document, Tokyo Arts and Space, Darling Foundry (Montreal), Transmediale (Berlin), the Research Pavilion (Venice), Prague Quadrennial, and Centro Cultural Recoleta (Buenos Aires). His works are held in the public collections of Kiasma Helsinki, MAC Lyon, and MAMC+ Saint-Étienne, as well as in private collections.

His collaborative practice with Aurélie Pétrel—Pétrel I Roumagnac (duo)—is represented by Galerie Valeria Cetraro (Paris).

Vincent Roumagnac est un artiste et chercheur en art basque-français basé à Helsinki. Formé à la scène, d’abord comme acteur puis comme metteur en scène, il s’est progressivement éloigné du théâtre comme médium de représentation du drame humain afin d’explorer ce que celui-ci peut devenir à l’heure des bouleversements écologiques, technologiques et géopolitiques dans le cadre méthodologique de ce qu’il nomme fluidité disciplinaire. Plutôt que de réinventer les formes du théâtre, il en relocalise les opérations et les rituels. Son travail explore la manière dont la scène peut passer d’un espace de représentation anthropocentré à un milieu relationnel dans lequel humains, autres-qu’humains, paysages, architectures, technologies, algorithmes, données et mémoires participent d’une même (éco)dramaturgie.

À la croisée des arts visuels, de la scénographie, de l’installation, de la performance et de la recherche artistique, Vincent Roumagnac développe des interventions in situ qui explorent ce qu’il nomme le re-ecologising theatre. Au-delà de produire des installations à partir du, et pour, le théâtre (en tant que discipline/institution), il poursuit le théâtre par d’autres moyens en déplaçant ses opérations vers des expositions, des jardins botaniques, des archives, des paysages, des infrastructures numériques et d’autres environnements. À travers ce qu’il appelle le redirecting, il transforme la mise en scène en une pratique de réorientation des relations, des agents, des temporalités et des matérialités. Ses œuvres mettent moins en scène des récits qu’elles ne composent des situations de coexistence où les interdépendances écologiques, la mémoire et les agents autres-qu’humains deviennent des procédures actives de composition plutôt que des thèmes de représentation.

Cette démarche prend forme avec son projet de recherche artistique doctoral Reacclimating the Stage (2015-2020), avant de se prolonger dans le projet postdoctoral  Data Ocean Theatre (2020-2025). Depuis 2025, il développe le projet de recherche artistique au long cours Floral Dramaturgies (2025–2030), qui poursuit cette investigation des généalogies écologiques et politiques du théâtre occidental. Il conçoit la recherche artistique comme une pratique écosystémique où les concepts émergent du faire artistique et se diffusent à travers des formats expérientiels, collaboratifs et sensibles de production collective des savoirs. Depuis 2021, il est chercheur invité à l’Université des Arts d’Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki), où il encadre des étudiant·es et enseigne à l’intersection de la performance, des arts visuels et de l’installation, de l’écologie théâtrale, de l’écodramaturgie, des pratiques situées, de la recherche artistique et des méthodologies interdisciplinaires.

Depuis 2010, Vincent Roumagnac collabore avec le chorégraphe finlandais Simo Kellokumpu et, depuis 2012, avec l’artiste visuelle française Aurélie Pétrel. En 2020, il est, dans le cadre de son duo avec Pétrel, lauréat de la Résidence Villa Kujoyama. Ses projets personnels et collaboratifs ont été présentés en France, en Espagne, au Portugal, en Italie, en Allemagne, en Finlande, en Suède, en Lituanie, en Islande, en Argentine, au Japon et au Canada, notamment au Centre Pompidou (Paris), au MAMC+ (Saint-Étienne), à la Comédie de Caen, au Kiasma (Helsinki), à Zodiak (Helsinki), à Hiroshima Art Document, à Tokyo Arts and Space, à la Fonderie Darling (Montréal), à Transmediale (Berlin), au Research Pavilion (Venise), à la Quadriennale de Prague et au Centro Cultural Recoleta (Buenos Aires). Ses œuvres figurent dans les collections publiques du Kiasma Helsinki, du MAC Lyon et du MAMC+ Saint-Étienne, ainsi que dans des collections privées.
